Post-Hurricane Fiona Update

STELLARTON, NOVA SCOTIA - In the aftermath of Hurricane Fiona, our crews are continuing to asses and repair damage of critical infrastructure throughout the Town. Many areas are still without power, storm drains are filled with debris, and damage can be seen across Stellarton.

While there is a sense of urgency in the restoration process, the impacts of Fiona are severe and will take time to repair. Residents are advised of the following updates to assist in the clean-up of the hurricane:

1. Property Damage

- Residents should make reports/claims regarding property damage through their insurance if they are able for immediate assistance.
- Trees that have fallen across properties can be removed by residents even if they are trees from town-owned land.
- Residents that report town-owned trees that have fallen on their property will be added to the Public Works list to be assessed for removal when crews are available. Given the devastation thorughout the county, this will take significant time.

2. Storm Debris & Tree Removal

- Residents who are able to remove their yard debris and trees themselves can put manageable-sized pieces at the front of their property for Public Works crews to collect by October 31.
- Pictou County Solid Waste is waiving the tipping fees for residents who are able to take storm debris (trees, limbs, brush, etc.) to the dump themselves. This is only for storm debris - garbage removal will still have fees.

3. Recreation Fields & Trails

- All trails and fields will be closed to recreational activity until a damage assessment can be complete.

4. Downed Wires

- Residents should report any downed wires to Nova Scotia Power directly by calling 1-877-428-6004.
- The Town cannot submit reports any sooner than residents and NS Power will require additional info about the wire and the area that the reporting resident will have quicker access to.

5. Comfort Centres

- The Stellarton Fire Hall will continue to operate as a comfort centre while power outages remain. Hours of operation are 8-11am and 7-9pm.
- While it's recommended that residents utilize the nearest comfort centre to them, there are several open throughout the county:
