As a result of the discovery of 215 bodies of First Nations children in Kamloops, BC, Mayor MacGillivray offers the following statement:
On behalf of the Town of Stellarton, we would like to extend our deepest sympathy and condolences to the Pictou Landing First Nations community and to all of our First Nations community members across the country. We stand with you to mourn the loss of the 215 innocent children whose bodies were discovered in British Colombia this past week.
Residential schools and their impacts are a grim part of our story as Canadians. We can never erase what has happened, but we can acknowledge our past and commit ourselves to learning from these experiences – ensuring a better and safer future to all Canadians.
Stellarton, along with many other municipalities across the province and country, have lowered our flags to half-mast to remember the 215 lives taken too soon. They will remain this way until sunset on June 8 – marking 215 hours of remembrance.
Danny MacGillivray
