Volunteer Awards Reception

Each year the Town of Stellarton accepts nominations from groups and citizens for people who have showed great dedication through Volunteerism. Every April during nation volunteer week we hold an award reception to show thanks.

This years award winners are:

Violet Cameron

Violet is the nominee from Sharon St. John United Church. When Violet retired from her nursing career and returned to Stellarton she became an active participant at the Church. She was on the Board of Stewards, Noteworthy Singing Group and the Light the Candle Service . Violet is also a busy member of the Quilt and Sewing group and is an active member of the Order of the Eastern Star. Because of her friendly personality and kind nature the UCW of Sharon St John are pleased to nominate Violet for recognition.

David Freckelton

Dave is a a very committed and community minded person. He has volunteered with Children’s Aid Society, PICCOLA, Construction Engineering Flight Squad, and the Pictou Regional Development Association. Dave also sits on the Board of Directors for Summer Street Industries and is currently the Chair of VON Pictou Site Board of Directors. The VON is proud to have nominated Dave for his extensive volunteer work.

Kenny Gordon

Kenny Volunteered with the Stellarton Fire Department for over  9 years. He has served on various committees such as Sports Committee, Finance Committee and is currently the Chair of the Entertainment committee. Stellarton Fire Department is proud to recognize Kenney for his contribution and his volunteer work.

Harvey “Brother” MacLeod

Brother has been a huge part of the RCAF 110 wing and has served in many capacities from President to Treasurer to his current role as House Committee Chair. He serves the Wing as representative on the Stellarton Homecoming Committee. He has always been an exemplary member and would go out of his way to help in any capacity. Brother is a wonderful member of the RCAF 110 Wing and is very deserving of this recognition.

Colin Wood

Volunteering as the Coordinator for the annual Walk the Walk for Autism, Colin has been the driving force behind the success of the event. Every year the event is held at GR Saunders elementary school and Colin helps see that every year is a success. In the past 5 years coordinating the event the Pictou County Chapter has raised over $210,000. The Pictou County Chapter for Autism NS is proud to recognize Colin for his hard work and contributions.

Mayor MacGillivray and Leia Patricia Mackay from the MacKay family to help present The Francis “Bud” MacKay Volunteer of the Year to this years Volunteer of the Year, Angela Hackett. 

Angela started volunteering in Pictou County as a La Leche League leader helping nursing mothers with support around breast feeding. Angela then turned her attention to helping start the first Roller Derby Association in Pictou County and worked as the clubs first president for 3 years. Now Angela dedicates a great deal personal time towards her daughters elementary school. Angela helps coordinate the Breakfast program, assisting with the Flouride program and volunteering when needed on class trips. Angela has shown dedication, kindness, and compassion in her volunteering to help organizations in her community succeed. She has always put her best foot forward to help out those in need and makes an impact in any organization she works with and on the people involved. 

GR Saunders and the Town of Stellarton are proud to honour Angela for her volunteer contributions.
